Yichieng was born 21/11/1985. Chieng is currently a Senior correspondent on The
Daily Show, Comedy Central. He is the creator and lead actor on the sitcom
Ronny Chieng International Student. It premiered on ABC Australia and Comedy
Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian
Chinese family. From 1989 until 1994, he lived in Manchester in New Hampshire.
Chieng was a performer at a comedy festival held in Melbourne, Australia in 2013
together with Trevor Noah. He was then asked to audition for the position of
correspondent on Noah's Daily Show two years after. In July of 2016, he was
named one of the top 10 comics you should Check out by Variety In October of
that year, Chieng appeared on The Daily Show to offer his response to a Jesse
Watters Fox News segment that was criticized by some as being racist. Chieng
presented an expletive-laden critique of the conservative network's segment.
Chieng also re-visited the city's Chinatown, where Watters were mocking
residents, and conducted interviews more respectfully with residents in
Mandarin and Cantonese. The video went viral and was covered by the Washington
Post, Slate, as well as other media publications. Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout
in his early years. While he's been in Australia for the past decade, Chieng
doesn't have citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia. Chieng
joked in 2018 that the cynophobe was his name, but afterwards, he said he was
100 % not scared of dogs.
